Two years ago, the proportion of permanent residents enlisting for National Service was 6 per cent. In 2015, it is projected to be 8 per cent. In 2020, that figure is likely to be 12 per cent.
This aspect of Singapore's changing demography will be one of the challenges for the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). And how the SAF responds will have an impact on the Republic's integration efforts and on whether PRs remain here, Second Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said on Friday, 21 November 2008.
