Is there a need for the comfort of the soul?

Exchange between Dr Goh Keng Swee and the reporter in an interview in 1984.

Reporter: Is there a need (for souls)?

Dr Goh Keng Swee: Yes yes, there is a need, but you must never ask the government to provide the need for the soul.

Reporter: How does the soul come out?

Dr Goh Keng Swee: When their tummy is full, then certain people will think more than material goods.

Reporter: Right now. Is it happening now?

Dr Goh Keng Swee: When they go to arts, music some will go to philosophy. Whatever, I don’t think here you want the government to provide (the you know) for the comfort of the soul. This is very dangerous, after sometime, (the government) we will tell you what to think.

What it means to serve Singapore

"To the new guards soon joining us, may I say this, welcome to you, some of you will discover before long, that you have joined a holy order, that expects total commitment from you, that will be your moment of truth. You will then regard the present condition of the republic, not as a pinnacle of achievement, but as a base of which to scale new height."

Quote from Dr Goh Keng Swee, Former DPM, 1918 - 2010, when he retired from politics in 1984
